Moving Oracle Databases to Oracle Cloud: a primer

Oracle Database users looking to modernise their existing self-hosted databases and applications have many deployment options in the public cloud and potential strategies to consider. It’s not always been the case that Oracle Cloud would be the immediate choice, but Oracle’s Cloud Infrastructure is growing year on year and is gaining a reputation in the public cloud space for providing outstanding price performance and as such should now be one of the first options to consider for database modernisation.
Why OCI?
Oracle’s generation 2 cloud was re-engineered from the ground up to support both enterprise applications with demanding performance requirements and applications that were designed for on-premises deployments (non-cloud native). For the latter this means it is easier to migrate legacy applications to the cloud as they do not need to be rearchitected to the same extent.
Oracle offers a choice of fully managed database service offerings (DaaS) as well as virtual machines and bare metal servers (IaaS). The Autonomous Database service is a good option if you are looking to reduce the admin overhead of managing your Oracle Database in the cloud. The autonomous offering provides automated performance tuning, resource scaling and patching.
If deploying as a VM OCI has the benefit of providing more customisation than other vendors with its offering of flexible compute shapes. Other providers may force you to use more ram or CPU’s than necessary as there are only fixed shapes available however with OCI you can customise the number of OCPU’s (1x OCPU is equal to 2x Virtual CPU’s as you have two threads per core) and memory when launching or resizing the VM. So, you can allocate cores and memory as needed and scale efficiently.
Looking to use your existing cloud investments?
Multi-Cloud is the new reality with more market choice and freedom available to those who look to deploy across multiple public clouds. Should you wish to keep your Databases running on Oracle and use Microsoft Azure for the application servers for instance this is both possible and performant. There are two key Azure services that can be used, firstly the low-latency interconnect between OCI and Azure for increasing inter-cloud performance and secondly the Oracle Database service for Azure. The Oracle Database service for Azure enables users already comfortable with Azure the ability to provision Oracle Databases from the Azure interface benefitting from Oracle Cloud Infrastructure without having to learn another cloud platform.
